Artist Statement
My art is a dialogue between life experience and inner reflection. As an emerging artist originally from China and now based in Melbourne, I create works that explore the complexity of the human psyche, often through figurative narratives and personal symbolism. Each piece becomes a mirror—reflecting both the visible and invisible, the spoken and the unspoken.
Life itself is my greatest inspiration. I observe the subtle details and fleeting moments that often pass unnoticed, and through painting I give them form. What I cannot fully express with words, I release instinctively through colour, texture, and gesture. This process transforms memory, emotion, and cultural identity into visual landscapes that invite the viewer to see a part of themselves within them.
Rooted in Abstract Expressionism and shaped by my study of Chinese calligraphy and Western art history, my work is informed by the tension and beauty of living in a hybrid cultural space. As an immigrant, I carry perspectives of both belonging and otherness, weaving them into layers of oil and mixed media that speak to universal questions of identity, memory, and human connection.

Chelsey is an emerging Melbourne-based artist whose practice explores the intersection of design, emotion, and cultural identity. Working primarily in oil and mixed media, she transforms personal memories and observations of daily life into symbolic visual narratives. Rooted in Abstract Expressionism, her work reflects a dedication to excellence in both craft and concept, inviting viewers to connect with the subtle details of the human psyche.
Biography
I am an emerging artist originally from China, now based in Boroondara, Melbourne, where I have lived for the past 10 years. I am a mother of two who loves art and nature. Life itself is my greatest source of inspiration. I love being an observer, absorbing the subtle details and fleeting moments of daily life. When I’ve taken in enough—whether through experiences, sights, or emotions—creating becomes instinctive, almost like an inevitable release. My motivation stems from the things I still want to say but can’t fully express with words alone.
My artworks delve into the complexity of the human psyche through figurative narrative in the form of personal symbolisms, each a visual manifestation of an aspect of my psychological landscape.
My artistic practice is rooted in Abstract Expressionism, using oil and mixed media to explore themes of emotion, memory, and cultural identity. By living in a hybrid cultural situation, I have naturally been open to a large range of stories about people and places, different perceptions about the world, each forming a rich resource for my art making. Being an immigrant has granted me a perspective of ‘the other’. I studied Chinese calligraphy from a young age, and began learning painting with a private teacher two years ago. My art teacher not only teaches painting techniques but also introduces us to Western art history, various art movements, and notable artists.
I am a Christian, my religious beliefs play an essential role in my art largely due to my experience living in a hybrid cultural situation. I believe in the wonders of God’s creation. I am in awe of the greatness and beauty of nature’s mystery, and also of how, despite our smallness, human beings possess profound power of thought. All of this is the source of my artistic creation. I am open to stories about people and places and the different perceptions about the world, each forming a rich resource for my art making. In my art, I combine different mediums creating discourses representing different social or cultural narratives sometimes connected; at other times disparate.
